A brilliant 171 not out from Rohit Sharma went in vain as hosts Australia defeated India comfortably by five wickets in the first ODI at Perth. On a perfect batting strip at the WACA, bowlers from both the teams had a tough time in curtailing the runs and as many as three centuries were scored. Australia chasing 310 cruised through to the target thanks to tons from George Bailey and Captain Steven Smith to record the highest ever run chase in ODI history at Perth.
Rohit Sharma 171 Highlights | Aus vs Ind 1st ODI at Perth 2016
India won the toss and chose to bat first in this opening VB Series 2016 One Day International. The visitors gave debut to Barinder Sran, the 23-year-old left-arm pacer from Punjab. Australia fielded a couple of pace-bowling debutants in 26-year-old Scott Boland and 23-year-old left-armer Joel Paris. India went in with three pacers and two spinners, a move that seemed to have backfired on a pitch that wasn’t conducive to turn at all.
The tourists had a solid start of 36 until the 7th over when Shikhar Dhawan yet again fell playing the hook shot. He scored 8 from 22 balls and was bounced out by Josh Hazlewood. The Aussies then had to watch a massive second wicket stand of 207 from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli that laid the perfect platform for Team India. Virat Kohli scored 91 from 97 balls with 9 fours and a six before getting caught at long on, trying to step up the gas in the 45th over.
Rohit Sharma displayed a full exhibition of his effortless big hitting once he had got past a half century. As many as seven sixes flew from the bat of the 28-year-old who scored his 9th ODI century. Rohit Sharma who just got married recently to Ritika Sajdeh had a great beginning to his post-marriage life as he finished with a breathtaking 171 not out from 163 balls which also included 13 fours apart from his sixes. Team India closed their innings at 309 for 3 in the allotted 50 overs which was quite a strong enough total. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood was economical with his 1 for 41 in 10 overs while newcomers Joel Paris and Scott Boland took a hammering. The Australian bowling unit for a change looked quite soft with none of the bowlers able to hit the 150 kmph mark unlike their predecessors. The likes of Hazlewood, Paris and Boland could bowl just a touch over 135 kmph!
Aus vs Ind 1st Odi Highlights | VB Series 2016
The Aussies were rocked back early in their run chase losing the dangerous opening duo of Aaron Finch and David Warner. While Aaron Finch drove one hard back to Barinder Sran who came up with an outstanding return catch, David Warner was dismissed by the same bowler, smacking one straight to Virat Kohli at covers. Australia were 21 for 2 in the 5th over with India all pumped up and looking to make further inroads in the long batting line-up of the hosts. However, India once again ran into Steven Smith who has already scored buckets of runs in all the formats of the game against them.
Former Captain George Bailey joined no.3 Steven Smith to seal the run chase with a huge third wicket partnership of 242 with none of the Indian bowlers able to sustain any sort of pressure. The 33-year-old George Bailey scored his 3rd ODI century, enroute to his 112 which came in 120 balls with 7 fours and two sixes. Steven Smith nearly finished the match, getting out at the last moment after easing to 149 from 135 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes. The Aussies romped home with four balls to spare.
Barinder Sran Bowling Highlights
Debutant Barinder Sran was the most successful bowler for India taking three for 56 in 9.2 overs. In his first major cricketing appearance, Barinder Sran showed that he can bowl around the 135 kmph mark but his strength being his ability to get the ball to skid through and hit the bat. However, all his three wickets had come because of the batsmen playing attacking shots to innocuous deliveries. Spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja got a pounding while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav just couldn’t create any impression on the batsmen.
Australia Skipper Steven Smith got the Man of the Match ahead of Rohit Sharma as he was part of the winning team.
