India’s Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has been signed up by Yorkshire to play in this season’s county cricket. Pujara who got an opportunity last year to play for Derbyshire should consider himself lucky as Yorkshire had originally signed up Pakistan’s veteran batsman Younis Khan. The former Pakistan Captain had decided to make himself available for his country’s tour of Bangladesh which would clash with the county matches.

It will be a great honour for Cheteshwar Pujara to play for Yorkshire as he would become only the second Indian player after Sachin Tendulkar to represent the club. Pujara who flopped miserably during the England Tour last year managed to play a few matches for Derbyshire at the end of last season. It would be in India’s best interests that Cheteshwar Pujara plays county cricket which should be immensely useful for himself and Indian batting in the long run.

Cheteshwar Pujara is supposed to play four-day matches in the LV=County Championship 2015 for Yorkshire until the end of May. He will then make way for Australia’s Aaron Finch who would by then have completed his IPL committment. It is also remarkable to note that Cheteshwar Pujara has grabbed the opportunity to play in English County following his snub by all the eight franchises in the upcoming IPL. Even if he was picked by any IPL team, it serves him no good as a cricketer. Pujara’s first game this season in English County is likely to be in 10 days time against Worcestershire.

Pujara as we know has been a prolific run scorer in Indian domestic cricket playing for Saurashtra. He has a highest score of 352 in first-class cricket and is known for his immense patience to stay long at the crease. While being decently successful at the international level, Cheteshwar Pujara hasn’t tasted much success overseas despite having a near perfect batting technique.

According to the Yorkshire Cricket Site, Cheteshwar Pujara is quoted to have said:

I’m very excited and honoured to be signing for Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The Club’s history is fantastic and being the current Champions is a testament to the quality of the Club and staff.

I was looking to return to the UK after my previous experience of county cricket, which I greatly enjoyed and when Yorkshire made the offer I didn’t think twice. To wear the same white rose Sachin Tendulkar did is going to be a great feeling for me. I hope I can contribute to further success.
