Former India wicket keeper and chairman of the selection committee MSK Prasad commenting on the India squad for Australia series said: “The team for the three ODIs against Australia has been selected in line with the rotation policy of the Board and accordingly R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested.
“The team’s performance during the Sri Lanka tour was outstanding and players like Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal, who performed very well are being given an extended run and this will in turn supplement our approach, to build a strong reserve strength, as we prepare for forthcoming tours.”
India defeated Sri Lanka 5-0 in the recently held ODI series which included a hard-fought victory in the second ODI of the series courtesy of a brilliant 100-run stand for the seventh wicket between former captain MS Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Manish Pandey, who has been impressive of late, has retained his place and so did Kedar Jadhav ahead of senior players like Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina who have been left in the cold.
The only one to miss out in the 16-man India Squad for the Australia series was Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur who was quite impressive in the limited opportunity he has had during the Sri Lankan tour.
Virat Kohli is the captain of the Ind squad vs Australia ODI series 2017 with Rohit Sharma named as the vice captain.
The India vs Australia ODI series which features five matches will begin on 17 September with the final ODI scheduled on 1 October. Australia will also be playing three T20s as part of the Aus tour of Ind 2017 which kicks off with a warm-up one dayer at Chennai on 12 September.
