Bangladesh continued their good work over the visiting Pakistan team as the former finished Day 1 of the 1st Test at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna at a steady looking total of 236 for 4. On what seems to be a flat batting pitch, yes Bangladesh haven’t run away with a big total to impose their domination. However, in the longer format, Bangladesh are no real threat compared to what they are in ODIs and T20Is. More of an emerging Test team, Bangladesh would be quite satisfied to lose only four wickets in an entire day’s play.

Earlier in the day, Bangladesh Captain for this format of the game – Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and opted to bat first. They were three debutants in this Test match at Khulna – 26-year-old medium pacer Mohammad Shahid and all-rounder Soumya Sarkar for Bangladesh, and 19-year-old opening batsman Sami Aslam for Pakistan.

The hosts were off to a solid start leaving Pakistan wait until the 27th over to find their first success of the day. And that came through when the in-form Tamim Iqbal was caught bat pad by Azhar Ali off leg-spinner Yasir Shah for 25. In the session following this in the afternoon, Pakistan had to be content with just another wicket with opener Imrul Kayes playing a lazy flick and patting back a return catch to Mohammad Hafeez just after working hard to make 51 from 130 balls. Bangladesh could put up just 92 runs on the board by the 42nd over when they lost their second wicket which means that the pressure was very much on them.

Pakistan’s third wicket came just before the second new ball was due when Wahab Riaz got Mahmdullah edging him behind to the diving Wicket Keeper Sarfraz Ahmed for 49. Just a ball to go before stumps, Bangladesh had thrown away the advantage that they had when a well set Mominul Haque was trapped lbw to left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar. Mominul Haque, who came in at no.3 scored 80 from 162 balls with 8 fours. Bangladesh were lucky that Pakistan could not hold on to their catches with atleast five going down! The Tigers have some good batting left for Day 2 with Shakib Al Hasan on 19* with the duo of Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar yet to come out and bat.
