Lokesh Rahul Profile | Lokesh Rahul Biography

(This Lokesh Rahul profile was written on Dec 31, 2014)

Lokesh Rahul (also called as KL Rahul) from Karnataka is the next generation Indian Cricketer. He is tall, lean and a stylish right-handed opening batsman blessed with the best technique perhaps. Lokesh Rahul had played for the India Under 19 team in 2010 the same year in which he made his Ranji debut for Karnataka. In the 2013-14 Ranji season, Lokesh Rahul scored more than 1000 runs to play a big part in Karnataka’s title win.

In the 2014 IPL season, Lokesh Rahul was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a hefty sum of Rs 1 crore to play as their Wicket Keeper batsman. Lokesh Rahul’s big break came when he was selected as the reserve opener for India’s Tour of Australia 2014/15. Following Rohit Sharma’s lack of runs and Shikhar Dhawan’s uncertain game, Lokesh Rahul was given a Test debut at Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Much was expected from the 22-year-old Lokesh Rahul on his Test Debut. But his batting turned out to be a damp squib and his Test debut will be remembered forever for his horrendous shot selection in both the innings. In the first innings, Lokesh Rahul came in at no.6 with India well placed following a massive partnership between Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. Barely after opening his account, Lokesh Rahul decided to step out and whip Nathan Lyon over mid wicket but almost got out but for a simple catch going down. Despite the luck, Lokesh Rahul didn’t learn his lessons and was dismissed soon playing a slog sweep off the rough from outside off and ended up with a top edge. In the 2nd innings, Lokesh Rahul was sent in at no.3 to negotiate the new ball as India was asked to bat out the remainder of the final day. However, Lokesh Rahul had a brain explosion for the second time and he went for an adventurous pull shot across the line to Mitchell Johnson to get out.

It was a shocking and wasted Test debut for one of the most talented young batsmen with scores of 3 and 1. The way Lokesh Rahul got himself out showed that he lacked the temperament at the highest level and that the nerves got the better of him. Hopefully he can show the world the real class player in him as the years go by.

On the personal front, KL Rahul comes from a highly educated family it seems with both his parents being professors. Lokesh Rahul hails from Mangaluru (Mangalore) in Karnataka. The most interesting thing is about his name. His father Dr Lokesh who was a big fan of Sunil Gavaskar named him Rahul thinking that it was also the name of the former great cricketer’s son. Dr Lokesh only came to know later that Gavaskar’s son’s name was Rohan and not Rahul. Nevertheless, Lokesh Raul has been more than happy to share the same name as Rahul Dravid who has been his role model growing up.
