Mohammed Shami, Rohit Sharma named in India squad for Champions Trophy 2017

India squad for Champions Trophy 2017 : Bengal fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been recalled in the Indian team after nearly two years for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 squad while Rohit Sharma who is fit again has also made it to the team that was selected on Monday.

Headed by former Andhra and India wicket keeper MSK Prasad, the selection committee named the same squad that defeated England at home earlier in the year with the exception of Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami.

MSK Prasad called the India squad for Champions Trophy 2017 as a balanced and experienced one while saying that this was the best possible side the selectors had picked.

Mohammed Shami, who last played in the ICC World Cup 2015 Semi Final came in for leg spinner Amit Mishra while Rohit Sharma replaced Karnataka opener Lokesh Rahul, who is out of action recovering from a shoulder surgery.

Karnataka middle order batsman Manish Pandey has been named as the 15th member of the India Squad for Champions Trophy 2017, edging out talented chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav.

Rohit Sharma who comes back after recovering from a thigh injury, was picked as the selectors noted his performance in the last 12 months.

Manish Pandey was the extra batsman named in the India Squad for Champions Trophy 2017 which will be led by Virat Kohli.

MSK Prasad revealed that the selectors were mulling over the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav but eventually decided to keep him on standby list.

“We definitely considered the name of Kuldeep. He would have been a surprise package but whether we would have played with two spinners is a question. Since Yuvraj (Singh) and Kedar (Jadhav) can bowl spin, he narrowly missed out,” MSK Prasad commented on Kuldeep Yadav missing out from the India Squad for Champions Trophy 2017.

Indi’s leading spinner R Ashwin, who is missing the ongoing Vivo IPL 2017 as he is recovering from a sports hernia injury, has been named in the India team for Champions Trophy 2017. MSK Prasad said that R Ashwin’s injury was not that serious and he just needed a bit of rest.

MSK Prasad added: “The injury was not serious. The franchise was magnanimous enough to listen to our request to rest him. Rest is what Ashwin required as the last game that India played, he was there. That shows he is fit and not like others who are getting rehabilitated after surgery.”

Some of the other players who came up for discussion among the selectors were Delhi wicket keeper batsman Rishab Pant, veteran Tamil Nadu wicket keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur and Suresh Raina who surprisingly missed out. Along with Kuldeep Yadav, the four players find their names in the standby list.
