This was after a 10th ODI century from their 27-year-old skipper Kane Willamson whose 115 from 117 balls took the hosts to 315 for 7 in the allotted 50 overs after being asked to bat first by Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed.

Henry Nicholls slammed 50 from 43 balls in the slog overs to give an ideal finish but much before that the impetus for the Kiwis was set by a rapid fire knock of 58 from 35 balls from opener Colin Munro.

For Pakistan, Hasan Ali was the most successful bowler taking three wickets.

In reply, Pakistan ended up at 166 for 6 in 30.1 overs when rain prevented any further action with the visitors well short of their D/L target at that time. Opener Fakhar Zaman was leading the Pakistani run chase with an unbeaten 82 from 86 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes.

However, Fakhar Zaman was losing partners at the other end, and it would have been a miracle if the visitors had gone on to win the match had there been no weather interruption.

For the Kiwis, Tim Southee took three wickets while his new ball partner Trent Boult claimed two wickets.

The second match of the five-match series – NZ vs Pak 2nd ODI will be played at the Saxton Oval in Nelson on Tuesday.
