Pakistan stunned cricketing world with dream victory in ICC Champions Trophy

Defying all odds, Pakistan thrashed the much-fancied Team India by 180 runs to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 last Sunday, by which they proved all their critics wrong that they are no longer a force to reckon in international cricket.

It was sweet revenge for Pakistan as they started off the tournament with a humiliating defeat against India in their opening match by 124 runs.

The pattern was the same, with the side that batted first piling up a massive total and the side chasing it crumbling under pressure. Another point was that in both the matches, the team that won the toss did the cardinal mistake of batting second in a high pressure game.

Not many would have imagined Pakistan to lift the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. With a new leader in Sarfraz Ahmed and quite a lot of unknown faces, Pakistan were certainly underdogs. In the cricket betting fraternity as well, Pakistan were not that highly rated and very few except the jingoistic fans would have predicted them to go on to win the trophy.

The team was devoid of superstars to be really honest but end of the tournament, Pakistan has surely unearthed at least a couple of them. One of them has got to be the left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman, he certainly made a lot of difference for Pakistan in the course of the tournament.

It can be recalled that Fakhar Zaman was not picked for the opening game against India. In the must-win league game against South Africa, Fakhar Zaman made his ODI debut scoring 31 from 23 balls. Against Sri Lanka in a virtual quarter-final, he smashed 50 from just 36 balls to help Pakistan clinch a thriller.

In the semi final against England, Fakhar Zaman scored 57 from 58 balls to help Pakistan ease to a target of 212. And in the final, he was on fire as well, scoring a maiden ODI century in what was only his fourth ODI!

Fakhar Zaman with a smashing 114 from 106 balls powered Pakistan to 338 on board. The Indians fancied their chances of chasing it down but on that day, the Pakistani bowlers were too good to handle.

Mohammad Amir wrecked the top order, removing the in-form Rohit Sharma for a duck in the very first over, followed it up with the prized scalp of Virat Kohli and then sent back the promising Shikhar Dhawan. After that deadly opening spell, India simply had no chance of bouncing back in the match.

For Pakistan, the tournament victory will give its players new levels of confidence that they can now go on to beat any side in the world on their day. Players like Fakhar Zaman and Hassan Ali proved that they are here to stay and look promising to have long careers for Pakistan.
