Phillip Hughes ‘critical’ after getting hit by a bouncer in Sheffied Shield

Update on November 27th, 2014: Phillip Hughes dies at 25 after failing to regain consciousness ever since he was hit by the bouncer

Australia international player Phillip Hughes faces a life threatening blow after getting hit by a bouncer during a domestic match today in Sydney.

The 25-year-old was quickly taken to the St Venus Hospital in Sydney where is reported to be lying in a state of coma. Such was the seriousness of the injury that even a medivac heliocpter had landed on the ground.

St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney has tweeted that Phillip Hughes is now out of surgery but he remains in critical condition in ICU. It is reported that the next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial for Phillip Hughes on whether he can recover from this traumatic head injury.

Batting well on 63 for South Australia, Phillip Hughes was all set to pull or hook a bouncer dug in by Sean Abbott but fate had him miss his shot and get brutally hit on the left back side of the head just below the head. Hughes was shattered after that and while trying to regain himself fell down smack on his head on the ground leaving the remaining players on the field shell shocked.

Phil Hughes became unconscious after that blow and even received mouth to mouth breathing from the medical staff before he was put on life-support and carried away to the hospital. So distressed the rest of the players on the ground, that the 4-day Sheffield Shield – New South Wales vs South Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground was abandoned after the nasty incident.

It is reported in the media that the distraught players of that New South Wales vs South Australia match are going to undergo professional counselling to overcome the shocking incident. The worry for Cricket Australia is that some of those players are going to play in the upcoming 4-match Test Series against India which begins on December 4th.

David Warner, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin and Nathan Lyon who are part of the Australian Squad for the Gabba Test against India were at the scene of the Hughes incident. The tragedy is that Phil Hughes was supposed to be picked for the Gabba Test in place of the injured Michael Clarke and now fate has him fighting for his life in a Sydney hospital.

Phil Hughes, who is going to turn 26 on November 30 is known to score big hundreds. This diminutive left-hander has played 26 Tests scoring 7 50s and 3 100s ever since making his debut in 2009. In te 25 ODIs that Phillip Hughes has played, he has scored 4 50s and 2 100s.
