Recap: The day Indian won the World Cup, six years ago

April 2, 2011 is a golden day in Indian cricket as India won the World Cup for a second time, after a gap of 28 long years. In what was a fairy-tale finish, MS Dhoni hit a six off Nuwan Kulasekara to seal a six-wicket victory against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

India were chasing a tough target of 274, but captain MS Dhoni smashed a brilliant 91 not out from 79 balls to lead India to victory. While MS Dhoni was the standout player of the game, Gautam Gambhir also made a critical contribution of 97 runs while Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli played key cameos as India won the World Cup for the first time since Kapil Dev’s team won the trophy in England in 1983.
