Sourav Ganguly Profile

(This Sourav Ganguly Profile was written on Apr 8, 2016)

Sourav Ganguly is one of India’s most successful captains. This Bengal cricketer is credited to have taken Indian cricket to the next level during his captaincy tenure. Many cricket fans and cricket experts believe that Saurav Ganguly has helped India learn the art of winning, especially in Test Cricket. Fondly called as ‘Dada’, Sourav Ganguly took over the captaincy reigns in the early 2000s – at a time when Indian cricket was going through its darkest episodes, courtesy of the match-fixing saga. Ganguly instilled self confidence in each of his young players, many of them who had his backing even if they failed the odd match or series. Under Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, Team India became a formidable force and after his retirement, became much stronger than ever.

An elegant left-handed middle order batsman, Sourav Ganguly was known for his sweet timing of the cricket ball. One of the most fascinating aspects of Ganguly’s batting was his six-hitting, especially off left-arm spinners. With Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly formed one of the best ever opening pairs in One Day Internationals. Ganguly had an early entry into international cricket aged around 19 during the Australia tour in 1991/92 where he hardly played and disappeared into wilderness. About five years later, Sourav Ganguly re-emerged as he was picked for the England tour in 1996 which would change the fortunes of Indian cricket because of bringing out two world class players in Rahul Dravid and Ganguly himself. On his test debut at Lord’s, Sourav Ganguly eased to a brilliant century to announce his actual arrival at the international scene. Since then, there was no looking back as Saurabh Ganguly went on to achieve peak levels in international cricket. Of course, he had his bad times in between, when he was out of team for quite some time when Greg Chappell was the National Coach. Dada though bounced back and ended up with a respectable finish to his international cricket.
