South Africa have named rookie wicketkeeper-batsman Heino Kuhn in a 16-man squad to face England in the upcoming 4-match Eng vs SA Investec Test Series 2017.

Heino Kuhn comes in for opener Stephen Cook, who has been omitted owing to poor performance against New Zealand in South Africa’s last Test series played in March.
The 34-year-old Stephen Cook, who scored a debut century in the SA vs Eng Centurion Test 2016, scored just 17 runs in four innings during SA Tour of NZ 2017.
Apart from Heino Kuhn, seam-bowling all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and 22-year-old Northerns batsman Aiden Markram have also been given their first call-ups to the South African Test squad.
The 33-year-old Heino Kuhn had recently scored a double century against Hampshire and then hit a hundred against England Lions for South Africa A.
Heino Kuhn’s first class average is healthy at 44.71 with 23 hundreds to his credit. He has already tasted international cricket by playing 7 T20Is ever since making his debut way back in 2009.
CSA Selection Convener Linda Zondi commenting on the South Africa Test Squad for the Eng vs SA Investec Test Series 2017 said: “Heino Kuhn has shown outstanding form for South Africa A on their recent tour of England which included a double century in the four-day match against Hampshire and a further century against the England Lions.
“He certainly deserved his place on consistent form which also includes back-to-back Sunfoil Series seasons.
“Andile’s selection is a continuation of our drive to develop bowling all-rounders for the Test team. He and Chris Morris will fill this role in support of Vernon Philander. At the age of 21 he is certainly one for the future,” said Linda Zondi.
South Africa will go into the Eng vs SA Investec Test Series 2017 with just the one spinner in Keshav Maharaj as offspinner Dane Piedt who had been part of the New Zealand tour getting dropped.
Faf du Plessis, the South African Test skipper is unlikely to play in the Eng vs SA Lord’s Test 2017, the opening match of the series due to the expected birth of his child. Should he miss, then Dean Elgar who had led the tourists in the warm-up match against England Lions is likely to take over the captaincy for the Lord’s Test.
