Wriddhiman Saha is a short-stature Wicket Keeper batsman from Bengal. His first-class career for Bengal started in 2007/08 as the regular Keeper and India discard Deep Dasgupta opted for the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL). Wriddhiman Saha made impact straightaway with a century on his Ranji Trophy debut for Bengal.
Today, Wriddhiman Saha is regarded as the technically best wicket keeper in India. His batting is quite impressive as well especially his technique is tailor-made for Test cricket. Wriddhiman Saha of late has also shown that he can hit the ball cleanly out of the ground. Saha has played some sparkling knocks in the T20 format especially the century in the 2014 IPL final for the Kings XI Punjab against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
While Wriddhiman Saha truly deserves a spot in the Indian Test team especially in the overseas tours, he has been forced to sit out because of the iconic presence of MS Dhoni.
For close to a decade between 2004-2014, Wriddhiman Saha has been waiting patiently to get his opportunity to become India’s Wicket Keeper. In 2014 following the retirement of MS Dhoni from Test cricket, the door has opened for this Bengal Wicket Keeper batsman and it is up for him to seal his big opportunity.
Wriddhiman Saha who is a very diminutive cricketer can hit the ball cleanly and has a very tight technique both as a batsman and as a Wicket Keeper. Saha made his Test debut accidentally in 2010 against South Africa at Nagpur following a freak last minute injury to Rohit Sharma. The Bengal stumper played as a specialist batsman in his first Test scoring a duck and then a solid 36.
In 2012, Wriddhiman Saha got his second opportunity to play for India but it was during a tough Test series in Australia. Again it was an unexpected opportunity as India’s no.1 preferred Wicket Keeper and also Captain MS Dhoni was suspended from the Adelaide Test because of slow over rate in the previous match. Saha scored 35 and looked very solid in his footwork and technique compared to MS Dhoni who is more of a flashy batsman playing loose shots.
With Dhoni’s retirement, the ball is in the 30-year-old Wriddhiman Saha’s court to make most of his opportunity. Batting talent he certainly has which he has displayed in the IPL 2014 Final when he smashed a century for Kings XI Punjab against KKR.
